-
- EXECUTING/RUNNING GIM...
-
- Here are some hints and brief explanations when running GIM
- for the first time. Refer to subsequent chapters for a more
- detailed explanation:
-
- 1. Menus are displayed at the top of the screen. Press and
- hold the <SHIFT> or <CTRL> or <ALT> keys to view
- additional menu selections.
-
- 2. The following keys have an almost universal function:
-
- <F8> Repaint/redraw the current display.
- <CTRL>+<F8> Change the color palette for the current
- area.
- <F9> Help!
- <F10> Exit (and save changes) from the current
- area to the previous area.
-
- 3. On the first screen (called the Folder Area), use arrow
- keys or the mouse to select between folders, directories,
- and disk drives. Then press the <F1> key to open the
- selected folder. (See chapter 3 for details.)
-
- 4. After opening a folder, the display (Multi Area) shows
- the information in your folder in the form of a modified
- Family Group Record and Pedigree Chart. The two spouses
- in a marriage are connected by a large vertical line and
- their children are to the left of this vertical line.
- Parents and grandparents are to the right of the current
- couple in a style similar to a pedigree chart. One member
- of the current couple will be highlighted along with one
- of the children. If the current selected person has
- multiple spouses, they are listed at the bottom left of
- the display. The bottom right contains brief vital
- statistics of the selected (highlighted) individual. (See
- chapter 4 for details.)
-
- 5. To select (highlight) a person displayed on the screen,
- use keypad keys or the mouse, as described in chapter 4.
-
- 6. To select a person not displayed, type in the name as
- best as you can remember. GIM will search the folder
- for any individuals with similar names. GIM will then
- present a list to you of its findings. You can select
- the specific individual from the list using arrow keys,
- the mouse, or by selecting the number listed next to the
- the desired person. There are other ways to select a
- person not displayed; see chapter 4 for details.
-
- 7. From the Multi Area, the <F1> key will enter a different
- environment (called the Person Area) which will display
- and allow modification of the selected person's vital
- statistics information -- birth, christening, marriage,
- death, burial, LDS ordinances, source notes, and research
- notes. (See chapter 7 for details.)
-
- 8. From the Multi Area, the <F2> key will enter another new
- environment (called the Family Area) which will display
- and allow modification of the selected family's vital
- statistics and family relationships. (See chapter 8 for
- details.)
